There is a group of Buddhist monks in Thailand who have built a temple out of nothing more than thousands of beer bottles. The Khun Han temple, neer the Cambodian border is made of Green Heineken, brown ‘Chang’ beer and various other soft drinks.

Apparently there are 20 buildings in the temple complex (called Temple of a Million Bottles – Wat Pa Maha Chedi Kaew) which was built as a testament to recycling.Over one million bottle were used in its construction.

The monks are now asking the Authorities in Thailand to send more bottles as the wish to extend the complex.

“The more bottles we get, the more buildings we make”

I bet it smells great in there.

Dust up in Chicago Rock (Macclesfield)

So apparently there was a big dust up in Chicago Rock Cafe in Macclesfield on Friday night. Five or six lads ended up beeting some other guy half to death. This is exactly the reason that I hate the place. I’m pretty lucky it happened when it did, I had only just left the place when it all kicked off.

I heared from friends that stayed out that the police were involved (and generally made things worse).

People should really pay attention to what is happening to them. Surely you woul notic that the only reason you are wanting to smash some guy up is that you have already drunk 10 pints of stella.

A Green Nightclub

There is a new class of nightclub that has begun to pop everywhere in big cities. Thousands of pounds has been spent developing ‘green’ nightclubs with little or no electrical requirements. often, when full of people these clubs actually put electricity back into the network.

The key to the scheme is due to a dance floor that actually generates electricity when being danced on. Piezoelectricity is used (it involves small chrystals rubbing agains each other) in the floors to generate enough electricity for 60% of the clubs electricity needs.

Local organic drinks, Walls that react to heat (without needing extra electricity) and rainwater toilets are also used in the new breed of clubs. Now at least there is one less thing to feel guilty about…

Pub closures

Pubs in the UK are at a crisis. Everyday, 5 pubs in Britain are forced to close because they are struggling with a huge range of problems.

40,000 jobs are at risk every day because of the decline in the pub trade.

It’s little wonder why then Mps aer banding together to try and give some protection to one of Britain’s most sacred of trades. If we loose the british pub forever we loose a good part of what it means to be British.

The ‘All Party Beer Group’ is a selection of 5 MP’s that meet up and discuss regularly what do do about this crisis. They are preparing to put foreword a proposition to decrease the recently increased duty tax on beer (its currently at a whopping 9%)

I would prefer that the kept the tax as it is for larger companies like Wetherspoons, only decreasing it for the smaller pubs that have been around since the dawn of time. What we really need to do is get away from companies like Wetherspoons and go back to our old pubs and enjoy the better atmosphere, better beer and friendlier atmosphere.

Nandos

Nandos are pretty much the same anywhere you go.. I can’t help but love their food though.. They strike me as one of the best places to go before a night out. The super hot Piri Piri Sauce is always a great conversation starter.. There is always one person who is slightly too brave with the sauce and ends up sipping water and sweating like mad.

You are pretty much stuck if you don’t like chicken though. But if that’s the case there is something seriously wrong with you.

Anyone who manages the extra extra hot piri piri chicken pita with extra ‘extra extra hot sauce’ is a better man than I am.. Nearly burnt my damn mouth off.

Old Orleans (Coventry)

So on this trip to Coventry we stopped off at quite a few other bars before heading to a nightclub. Old Orleans was the last one we went to – so it was quite late in the night. Having been there a few times before, we all knew that this place does some pretty decent cocktails.

We tried several different ones before we thought it best to move on:

Alligator Cooler: Mainly Smirnoff and Midori (some kind of melon liquor I believe) topped with lemonade and a couple of sours thrown in to up the alcohol. This one was my favorite. Really long and cool.

Long Island Ice Tea: Nothing too special here, expertly mixed and good Tequila. Definitely a safe bet if you don’t know what to order.

French Quarter Martini: I’m never too fond of Martini’s but everyone else seemed to enjoy it.

If you are in Coventry, you simply must got to Old Orleans and try some. I really enjoyed it.

Jumping Jacks (Coventry)

I had a night out in Coventry recently. In all honesty, I was quite impressed. I figured Coventry to be one of those places that are a little too close to Birmingham, without actually being in Birmingham to be any good on a night out.

We ended up in Jumping Jacks, I know its one of those massive liquid-like chain of bars and nightclubs, but I can’t say no to the cheap (ish) drinks and massive dance floor they have in there. They have a fast track queue down the side that not many people know about, which is pretty good (it only costs £4 more than the regular, 1 hour wait queue). It was a little unfortunate that half out group got in, then they decided to close the queue, leaving me and a couple of others to brave the long queue. No amount of bargaining with the massive scary looking bouncers they have there got us through. All in all though.. once we got in, it was a great night.

Alcohol Kills Twice as many men as women

There was a survey that was undertaken in Scotland the other week that showed the rather unsurprising result that twice as many men are dying from alcohol misuse than women.

The results showed that on average, 1000 Scottish men and 400(ish) women dies from alcohol related illnesses every year..

The group that released the results also added “Scotland is facing a huge public health problem which will require strong and radical action by the Scottish Government”

I personally thought that this would be pretty obvious.. you only have to walk through any major town in England to see that there are a whole lot more men drinking a whole lot more than women.

Russian Moonshine

Did anybody see the TV show on a couple of days ago showing a remote(ish) town in Russia where all the inhabitants where turning yellow and dying?

The program makers launched a massive investigation to find out why these people where dying. They found that their livers where shutting down (explains the jaundice) due to drinking large amounts of an industrial cleaner that was being produced at a local factory.

The program highlighted that Russia still has a big problem with Moonshine as they raised taxes on alcohol to a point where the poorer members of the population could not afford it. Instead of curbing the alcohol problems that much of Russia suffers from, Members of remote communities turned to moonshine makers and contraband vodka that often contains a combination of perfume, aftershave, and cleaning liquids. It is thought that this is one of the major contributors to Russia declining life expectancy.

Living in an Old Pub

I am currently in the process of moving to a new house. As I decided to rent, I was looking for a decent sized house share.

I went for a viewing at a place that turned out to be the old Swan Hotel Pub in Macclesfield. The place had always had a pretty rough reputation, so I guess it had eventually been shut down due to the various ba fights and stabbings that occured there over the years.

It was a pretty amazing place to live, the whole bottom floor is open plan with a wooden floor and smaller sitting areas in various parts of the house. The whole place still smells of beer and everything. I quite like the idea of living in an old pub, but i’m not sure if it will get old quickly.
